Newport News FC Travel Soccer Club Tryout Information

TRYOUT INFORMATION
2010-2011 SEASON

Welcome to  the
Newport News FC Travel Soccer Club

Hello prospective and returning parents/players:

As many of you already know, Newport News FC has proven to be one of the best overall clubs in the State of Virginia and is the most decorated club on the Virginia peninsula since our inception in 2003, proving the quality of our youth soccer development system.

Our players not only become high level players, but have the unique opportunity to grow with their team each and every year. Although no one can be guaranteed a place on a team, 95% of the time players and parents return to NNFC with players usually placed back on their team with their friends and coach. The main thing to emphasize is that only at Newport News FC can a player who is 9 years old potentially play with his friends until he graduates from high school. The majority of our successful teams have proven this is what is best for the players in the long run.

This past year was another successful year for many reasons. We had many players go on to participate on local high school teams and many won all-district honors and were named captains of their teams. Additionally, we are extremely pleased to announce that several of our graduating U18 players were signed to play collegiate soccer. You can see the list of high schools and the players who made their respective teams from NNFC and the players who represent our graduating class of 2010 by clicking here.

THE TRYOUT PROCESS

THIS YEAR WE HAVE EXPANDED THE TRYOUT OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERY AGE LEVEL. EVERY PLAYER WILL HAVE SEVERAL OPPORTUNITIES TO PROVE THEY ARE READY FOR THE CHALLENGE OF PLAYING SOCCER AT THE HIGHEST YOUTH LEVEL AVAILABLE.

ABOUT OUR YOUTH SOCCER SYSTEM

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF COACHING

Dear Prospective Newport News FC Parent Members and Players,

"I am confident that your decision to join the Newport News FC soccer family will provide you and your child the best youth soccer experience on the Virginia Peninsula. Our professionally licensed coaching staff represents one of the finest in the State, with former college and professional players who take a personal interest in your child's soccer future. This year we have added Bill Lakin to our club Technical Staff. Bill comes with the highest soccer licenses available and a wealth of knowledge and experience working with state champion teams and former United States National Team Players. Coach Lakin has been involved in our Youth Academy Program and will be helping steer the technical development of every player from U10-U14. His focus with the older players will be on team dynamics and high-level play tactics.

Going into our 7th year, Newport News FC has won more Championships than any other club in the area. We encourage you to join us and watch your child grow in to the player we know we can help them become.

If you have any questions about tryouts or the club, don't hesitate to contact me. I am here to help you guide your child and get the most out of their soccer training and experience at Newport News FC."

How Registration works

Who can participate with Newport News FC?
All residents of Newport News and surrounding communities are eligible to tryout/participate with NNFC. Tryouts are for open for all current players, new players transferring to NNFC and recreation players. There is no cost to tryout.

How Newport News FC Tryouts work:
All Players will be evaluated on their individual technical ability (skill) and their decision making in small sided and full field game environments. Our tryouts are designed to give players a chance to showcase themselves individually and we welcome parents observing.

For Players New to the Club:
Once you submit the online registration form, your child will be officially registered. When you and your child arrive at tryouts you will need to sign a participation waiver form and pick up their tryout number (if used) from the registration table for them to participate. If you have questions, please contact our Director of Coaching at DOC@newportnewsfc.com.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR NEW PLAYERS:

IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO ATTEND EVERY TRYOUT IF POSSIBLE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO MISS ANY OF THE DATES, SEND AN EMAIL TO THE COACH OF THE AGE GROUP YOU ARE TRYING OUT FOR SO THEY KNOW YOU INTEND TO TRYOUT FOR THEIR TEAM. EMAILS CAN BE SENT TO SOCCER@NEWPORTNEWSFC.COM. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S NAME, PHONE NUMBER AND A SHORT NOTE FOR THE COACH. EMAILS WILL BE FORWARDED ACCORDINGLY.

The Tryout Process and Team Placement

What players should bring?
All players should come prepared to play with a ball, water and shin guards.

When will we know if we made a team?
All Parents will be notified by email of team placement decisions on May 26th.

How do I determine my child's age group?
Please use the chart below or click here for a chart diagram.

The following age groups will be used for the Fall 2009/Spring 2010 Season:

• U19 - Players born 8/1/91 and younger
• U18 - Players born 8/1/92 and younger
• U17 - Players born 8/1/93 and younger
• U16 - Players born 8/1/94 and younger
• U15 - Players born 8/1/95 and younger
• U14 - Players born 8/1/96 and younger
• U13 - Players born 8/1/97 and younger
• U12 - Players born 8/1/98 and younger
• U11 - Players born 8/1/99 and younger
• U10 - Players born 8/1/01 and younger
• U09 - Players born 8/1/02 and younger
• U08 - Players born 8/1/03 and younger

Age Groups Made Easier
If you are unsure of what age group to register your child for here is another way to figure it out. If your child is nine now and will not turn ten until after August 1, they are considered an Under 10 (U10). This method can be used for any age group. In the previous example if they turned 10 July 31, they would be considered a U11 player.

What to expect after Tryouts

Whether or not your child is selected for a team, you will receive communication from the club by May 26, 2010. If your child is selected to join a team you will be contacted next by your team's coach or manager and given details about attending your team's organization meeting. Generally these meetings are held by July 1st. This year, all players will need to order new uniforms through your team managers to assure you have them by the start of the season. (You can find out what numbers are available from your coach or manager.)

Team meetings for all Teams

At the team meeting, every team should discuss the calendar and every coach will provide the opportunity for parents to learn about their expectations and goals for the teams and players.
